Couple Arrested for Child Abuse in Visalia
VISALIA – A man and woman were arrested in connection to the severe physical abuse of a 3-year-old boy.
The Visalia Police Department arrested 30-year-old Trevor Bishop after he turned himself in to police officers. He has been accused of beating his girlfriend Desie Horton’s son last week. Bishop and Horton had been dating for six months when the alleged incident had happened.
After the boy was hit, he began acting lethargic so Bishop tried to cheer him up with a physical activity. Police said this made the boy’s brain and head injury worse. The child was taken to the urgent care clinic at Kaweah Delta in Visalia and later transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he is listed in a coma in critical condition.
Horton, 29, was arrested the same day Bishop turned himself in to police. Authorities say that through their investigation they concluded that Horton neglected to protect her son from Bishop.
Bishop has been charged with one count of child abuse causing paralysis or a comatose state, and two counts of child abuse with special allegations that the abuse caused injury to a child under 5, and resulted in the injury to the brain. Bishop faces a life sentence for the first count and 12 years in prison for the additional counts if convicted.
Horton is facing felony child abuse charges for failing to protect her son and could face up to six years in prison.
Bishop is also facing DUI charges and driving with a suspended license in Siskiyou County.
