Santa Barbara – Goleta, just north of the Santa Barbara city limits and boasting a population of 30,000 good citizens, apparently has more than its fair share of activity surrounding the sale, distribution, and consumption of controlled substances.
As one of California’s newest incorporated cities, Goleta may have avoided the urban sprawl that some would say characterizes much of the rest of southern California, but with the unincorporated community of Isla Vista directly to the south and sharing a zip code as well as significant law enforcement resources, illicit drug activity continues to drive considerable questionable entrepreneurial and commercial enterprises as evidenced by frequent and widespread arrests like that of Armando Trejo, 37, in the pre-dawn hours of April 4th.
According to media reports by Kelly Hoover, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Public Information Officer, Trejo had been the subject of ongoing investigation and research on the part of the SBSD Office Narcotics Enforcement Unit for “over two months.” Working in concert with Goleta Patrol Deputies, Trejo was detained in a putative traffic stop at 6:00 a.m. at a prominent area intersection. As he was being detained by patrol deputies, coordination between SBSD teams allowed for the service of a search warrant upon Trejo’s Goleta home.
“During the search the of the residence,” Hoover reported, “Detectives located approximately 2.5 ounces of cocaine with a street value of more than $7,000.” She also reported that a significant amount of cash, “consistent with drug sales”, was also found in the home along with paraphernalia and equipment indicating an active packaging and distribution enterprise.
Trejo was arrested by Detectives on the scene of the traffic stop and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance for sale, with bail set at $30,000.
