Father Causes School To Be Locked Down
HOLLISTER—Authorities with the Hollister Police Department arrested 48-year-old Hollister resident Rey Salgado on Tuesday after he called the Calaveras Elementary School and demanded his children be released to him, causing the school to go on lockdown.
At 9:30 on Tuesday Officer Esqueda of the Hollister Police Department responded to Calaveras Elementary School after Salgado wanted the school to release his children to him. A records check on Salgado revealed that he had a restraining order filed on him naming the mother and the children as protected parties.
After finding out about the restraining order and that Salgado also had a local felony warrant out for his arrest, the School and District Administrators initiated a code blue lockdown of the school.
Officer Esqueda stayed at the school and the surrounding area in case Salgado showed up at the school. Officers checked several known addresses for the whereabouts of the suspect.
At 11:30 a.m., officers from the Hollister Police Department located Salgado sitting in his pickup truck in the 100 block of Nash Road located about a mile south of Calaveras Elementary School. He was immediately placed under arrest for the local felony charge.
“Acting on the information provided by us in regards to the suspect, the school and the district decided to lockdown the school,” Hollister Police Captain David Westrick said. “I thought it was a good decision and the right move for them to make for the safety of the children.”
Once it was confirmed that police had Salgado in custody, officials with Calaveras Elementary School determined that it was safe to lift the lockdown order. Salgado was booked into the San Benito county Jail. His bail has been set at $170,000.00 dollars.
The charges that he face are the local felony warrant charge of penal code 245 which is assault with a deadly weapon, penal code 273.5 for domestic violence, penal code 422 for making terrorist threats, and in addition to those charges he was charged with 11350 HS for having a controlled substance on him at the time of his arrest.
