Redlands Teacher Arrested After Having Baby With Student
REDLANDS – A Redlands Unified School District teacher was arrested on Monday for an alleged relationship with a 16-year-old student with whom she had a child last month.
Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst, 28, gave birth to a child on June 18. Two weeks after that, she was arrested after the now 17-year-old boy told his mother about having a relationship with the Citrus Valley High School English teacher. School district officials immediately contacted police, a statement from RUSD reported.
“They met approximately a year ago,” said Redlands Police Commander Shawn Ryan, “and started talking away from school and developed a relationship there. One thing led to another and he ended up at her residence and it’s been ongoing for approximately one year now.”
Reports are that the boy told his mother on Monday; she reported it to the school, which led to the investigation.
Redlands investigators questioned Whitehurst at her Fern Street home on Monday night, shortly before 9 p.m.
Whitehurst, who is unmarried, served as an adviser in an on-campus club, and also served as an assistant soccer coach.
Whitehurst, whose parents are both educators at different school sites in the area, is charged with having unlawful sex with a 16-year-old, according to Carl Baker, spokesman for the Redlands Police Dept. She posted $25,000 bail on Monday night. The boy graduated from Citrus Valley High School last month, said officials. Redlands police confirmed the boyis the baby’s father. According to friends of the family, Whitehurst kept the identity of the father a secret, though she did reveal privately that she was having a girl.
Whitehurst has taught at other Redlands-area high school campuses, including Redlands and Redlands East Valley, where she served as a substitute teacher.
Baker said the case is still under investigation.
