Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Suspects
Unlicensed Driver runs Stop Sign
CASTROVILLE—Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested two juveniles from Castroville after a search of their vehicle revealed stolen property.
On Saturday July 6, at 6:18 pm, two Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a traffic stop on a 2002 silver Mercedes C240 after it failed to stop at a stop sign at the corner of Seymour Street and Union Street in Castroville.
When the vehicle pulled over, the rear passenger ran from the vehicle as the driver and the front passenger stayed in the vehicle. As deputies searched the vehicle they found property belonging to the North Monterey County Middle School.
Further investigation determined that the school, which is located on Seymour Street, had been burglarized and vandalized with gang graffiti. The driver was found to be unlicensed and had marijuana on his himself that seemed to be packaged for sale.
Both juveniles were transported and booked into the Monterey County Juvenile Hall. They were charged with burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana for sale, aggravating a police dog and gang enhancements.
A search warrant was served at their residences and authorities found gang indicia and an unregistered .22 caliber revolver.
“While searching their homes we found gang indicia, which means they found information that appeared to be gang related,” Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Commander Lisa Nash said.
Both juveniles are believed to be active members of a street gang. Deputies are still looking for the third suspect in this case.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information regarding this incident or the third suspect to call the Sheriff’s Department at 831-755-3700 or their tip line at 888-833-4847.
