Officer-Involved Shooting; Suisun City Resident Killed
Fairfield Police Special Operations Officers working “to reduce street crime” in Fairfield’s East Tabor Street district shot and killed Leigh Weeden, 47, of Suisun City July 23rd. Weeden was shot several times as the officers “discharged their firearms protecting themselves.”
According to a press release issued by Fairfield PD Deputy Daryl Snedeker, the incident began near the intersection of Grande Circle and East Tabor Avenue. Special Ops Officers Chris Grimm and Eric Pulsipher had attempted to initiate a traffic stop after observing Weeden commit several traffic offenses.
Weeden, driving a black 2003 Hummer, sped away. He lead the officers on a high speed chase that ended in Suisun City only after the Hummer careened off Bella Vista Drive and got stuck in a dirt embankment.
Arriving in a field beside the embankment, Officers Grimm and Pulsipher exited their cars and approached Weeden to take him into custody. Weeden stepped out of the Hummer but then apparently the officers came too close. Weeden suddenly reached back in the driver’s side door, allegedly snatched up a handgun and opened fire on the officers, who then shot him. Weeden died thereafter in a local trauma center.
Deputy Snedeker’s press release also included Weeden’s “extensive criminal history,” a list including weapons charges and robberies in several states. Weeden had also been convicted of armed bank robbery and served 10 years in prison. He was on federal probation at the time of the shooting.
Officers Grimm and Pulsipher have been placed on paid administrative leave pending conclusion of an investigation into the incident, authorities confirmed.
