Bakersfield Man Arrested Again in Case of Four Month Old’s Death
A Bakersfield man has been arrested and charged with murder after his four month old daughter died while in his care.
Four month old Paige Cohen was found unresponsive at a home in the 2100 block of Park Way on June 4th. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.
According to the father caring for her, 34 year-old John Wilburn of Bakersfield, he was watching his daughter and left her unattended for a short time. When he came back, he claims she was able to roll herself off of the couch, which is when she sustained her injuries. Investigators say the injuries that Paige sustained do not match with Wilburn’s story.
Instead of immediately taking the child to a hospital, Wilburn waited for his girlfriend, the mother of the child, to return home, as she was on her way to work. The cause of Paige’s death was a blunt injury to the head.
Initially, Wilburn was arrested for the death of Paige in June. He was released on June 11th after the Kern County District Attorney’s Officer awaited the results of tests from the coroner’s office. The results of the test arrived in late July, which allowed for a no-bail arrest warrant to be released on July 31st.
Wilburn was arrested Tuesday for murder, felony child abuse, criminal threats, and spousal abuse. He was taken into custody without incident and was booked into the Kern County Jail.
