Sex offender arrested after kidnapping and assault
ANTIOCH – On Tuesday afternoon, at 3:40 pm, police were called to the Somersville Towne Center on reports of a man brandishing a handgun. Antioch Patrol officers responding to the scene located and captured the suspect, 43-year-old Kevin Harvey of Antioch. Further investigation tied him to a kidnapping and rape reported just a day earlier.
On Monday, at about 2:30 pm, a victim, only identified as an adult female from Antioch, was in the parking lot of K-Mart on 18th street. As she reported to police later, she was abducted at gunpoint by a man, who then forced her to drive to multiple locations in Antioch, and was sexually assaulted by the man. According to a press release from the Antioch Police, she was eventually able to escape from his control, and ran to a nearby home where she called the police.
During the investigation into this incident, clues pointed to Harvey, who is a registered sex offender. When he was detained the next day on the weapons charges, the case against him came together. He was positively identified as the suspect, and the handgun he had with him when arrested was the same one used to threaten his victim in the assault. Police report that additional evidence linking him to the kidnapping and sexual assault was also gathered.
Harvey is currently being held at the Contra Costa County Detention Facility in Martinez facing multiple felony charges, while the D.A.’s office prepares to file criminal charges against him. Police have asked that anyone with additional information call Antioch Police Detective Joannides at 925-779-6931.
