$1.6 Million Bail for Double Murder Suspect
Jorge Cervantes, 19, was indicted on August 2nd pursuant to an investigation that has been in progress since his arrest on April 2nd on suspicion of involvement in the 2009 murders of two Oxnard men.
The murders allegedly occurred ten days apart, and took place as part of a series of five Oxnard killings at the hands of members of the area’s “Lemonwood Chiques” gang. Cervantes is now charged with two counts of murder, attempted shooting at an inhabited dwelling and additional gang enhancements related to the killings.
Alfredo Vargas reportedly died as the result of a January 17th fight on the street of an Oxnard residential neighborhood. Just ten days later, Ramiro Huerta was shot to death while walking from a local convenience store to his home, a short distance from where Vargas was killed.
According to Oxnard Police Department spokesman Detective Mike Young, a multi-agency task force that included Detectives from Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office was launched just this month to aggressively investigate the killings, and their efforts led to the indictments of gang members Cervantes, Guillermo Galvan, Alexis Ramirez, and Jonathan Gallegos. Each man is believed to have participated in the murders of Alfredo Vargas and Ramiro Huerta.
“There are additional suspects in these homicides,” Young announced to the media, declining to be more specific while the investigation remains ongoing. Cervantes remains in custody at Ventura County Jail, with his bail now set at $1.6 million.
