Isla Vista – UCSB, where the competition for grades may be so fierce as to affect undergraduate judgment, is experiencing more than its share of illicit drug trafficking, as students appear to be using prescription drugs as a form of “study aid.”
According to Kelly Hoover, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Public Information Officer who has recently reported repeated incidents of a similar nature, SBSD Narcotics Unit Detectives brought another investigation into controlled substance sales in the UCSB campus area to a close in the early evening hours of November 1st. It was at that time that an arrest of Jacob Loureiro, 23, was made pursuant to “a search warrant served at his apartment located in the 6500 block of Seville Road” that was issued following an extensive investigation and period of surveillance conducted by area law enforcement.
The search of Loureiro’s apartment, Hoover reported, revealed “evidence establishing that he was selling several types of prescription medications” as well as marijuana to residents throughout the Isla Vista community. During the search, detectives also found a number of weapons including a shotgun, handgun, collapsible baton, and brass knuckles.
Following the discovery of the drugs and weapons, Loureiro was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of possession for sale of a controlled substance, possession for sale of marijuana, and possession of a deadly weapon. According to Hoover, the District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the totality of the evidence based upon the combination of drugs and weapons discovered under the search warrant. Loureiro remains in custody on $30,000 bail.
