ROSAMOND — Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 36-year-old felon who was in possession of a firearm after a routine traffic stop on Friday results in the discovery of the sale of methamphetamine.
According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy from the Rosamond substation in the eastern part of the county was patrolling a section of Backus Road at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 28, when he stopped a Honda Civic for a traffic violation near 50th Street.
The driver of the vehicle was Rosamond resident Brian Smith, who the deputy said was displaying signs of drug influence.
After the arrival of additional deputies a search of Smith’s vehicle was conducted.
During the search deputies found an electronic scale and over two and a half ounces of suspected meth worth an estimated $2,500, which was packaged for sale inside a jacket that was lying on the driver seat of the car.
Deputies also found a loaded 9 mm Beretta pistol located next to the driver seat.
Smith was arrested and booked into the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Mojave Jail on charges of transportation, possession for sales, possession for sales of meth while armed, felon in possession of a firearm and various other charges.
His bail has been set at $260,000.
