The Redding police announced last week the arrest of Adam Paul Marshall, 26 of Redding, for a series of offenses against local businesses, involving theft and identity theft.
Marshall has had several run-ins with the law this year, including an arrest on November 5th for possession of stolen checks from the local business Amazing Finds Furniture store. He was booked at the Shasta County Jail at the time.
Back on the streets, on Friday November 22, he went to Barnes & Noble and bought some items, paying with another stolen check, perhaps one he stashed away from Amazing Finds. He came back the next morning to return the items, getting cash back for the merchandise. No doubt feeling buoyed by his easy success, he popped over the next block to the AT&T store and apparently managed to make off with a iPhone 5 from a display counter.
Liking his location, he cruised the Mt. Shasta Mall, but apparently took some time to come up with a plan. With a pair of cheap imitation diamond earrings in his pocket, possibly picked up at one of the Claire’s stores in the mall, he entered Harry Richie’s Jewelers and asked if he could look at a pair of $1400 earrings. With a little slight of hand, he handed the sales associate back the cheaper pair, suggesting the price tag must have fallen off them. He also managed to grab a men’s watch from a display rack, perhaps while they were looking for the missing tag, and left the store with it and the real diamond earrings.
After apparently laying low for a week and a half, last Wednesday, December 4, went to the Northstate Check Exchange, and tried to cash some checks using an out of state identification for another name. He raised suspicions with the staff there, who are in the business of cashing checks and know how to spot a potential fraud. Police were alerted, and before Marshall could figure out they were on to him, officers arrived and questioned him. In addition to the fake ID, they found some used methamphetamine pipes.
Marshall was taken into the Redding Police station for further investigation. There he confessed to stealing from local businesses in an effort to support his meth habit. He was still wearing the watch he took from Harry Richie’s. He was booked for three counts of commercial burglary, two counts of forgery, and one count of possessing stolen property. More charges may be added as the investigation continues.
