Stabs Business Partner, Avoids Arrest by Jumping Off Bridge
Santa Barbara – Entrepreneurs don’t always have an easy time of it, as demonstrated by the bizarre events that transpired in the pre-dawn hours of December 2nd when Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies answered a 911 Emergency call reporting a stabbing just north of the city limits.
Upon arrival at a private residence on Myrum Street, Deputies found Rubel Trevino, 56, suffering multiple stab wounds. He was immediately transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for medical evaluation and surgery. According to SBSD Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover’s report to the media, Trevino informed Deputies that he had been sleeping in his bed when “his business partner, 66 year-old Thomas Hutchinson” attacked him with a knife. According to Hoover Trevino “was able to get away” and call for help, whereupon the attacker fled the premises.
Both the suspect and the victim had a troubled business relationship involving a three-way partnership in a parental advocacy enterprise called “About the Children”, and shared a contentious history of litigation and management conflicts.
As detailed by Hoover, “fifteen minutes later Deputies responded to a report of a subject attempting to jump from the Winchester overpass in Goleta,” an elevated roadway approximately thirty feet above the high-speed traffic of U.S. 101. As Deputies arrived on the scene, they attempted to make contact with Hutchinson, but he summarily jumped off the overpass and onto the roadway below. Paramedics were immediately summoned, but, as Hoover described in her report, “despite life-saving measures…the subject was pronounced dead at the scene.
