Ventura County – Just before the midnight hour on New Year’s Eve December 31st, a trio of young people–two males and a 17-year-old female–assembled in a City of Moorpark public park facing Moorpark Boulevard.
The two young men, Stephen Chavez, 21, and Cameron Pucik, 18, apparently had a verbal exchange that did not go particularly well and quickly escalated into a physical confrontation between them. Such was the intensity of the disagreeable exchange that Chavez pulled a knife on Pucik and succeeded in stabbing the young man in the neck and abdomen. During the violent exchange, the juvenile female was stabbed in the hand.
Witness 911 Emergency calls soon had the Moorpark Police Department on the scene, whereupon the two injured parties were located, quickly evaluated, and promptly transported by ambulance to Los Robles Hospital. Witness and victim statements identified Chavez, who by then was nowhere to be seen.
According to Ventura County Sheriff spokesman Sgt. John Gleason, units from both the Moorpark Police Department Detective Bureau and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit were dispatched throughout the area and “located Chavez a short time later and arrested him for assault with a deadly weapon.” Gleason further reported to the media that Chavez was booked into Ventura County Jail with bail set at $25,000, while “the injuries sustained by the victims are not considered life threatening.”
