A Yolo County Deputy fired two shots at a driver who rammed into his vehicle the night of January 5 near Dunnigan. Amazingly, no one was injured in this incident that took place along I-5 in northern Yolo County. Authorities did not identify the deputy.
It all began around 8:20pm Sunday night when, on routine patrol along northbound I-80 in Woodland, the deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for unspecified traffic violations. The vehicle did not stop. Instead, the driver, later identified as 28-year-old John August Schroiff, no permanent address, fled. His speed quickly exceeded 110 mph with the deputy in hot pursuit. Twenty miles later, the deputy lost sight of him. But then, as he returned to duty, the deputy spotted Schroiff’s vehicle again.
Instead of fleeing, this time Schroiff rammed the deputy’s vehicle and pointed a handgun at the deputy. “Believing the suspect presented imminent danger to the public, the deputy fired two rounds, striking the suspect vehicle,” a Yolo County Sheriff’s spokesman said.
Schroiff fled again but soon abandoned his vehicle in a field near a truck stop and ran onto I-5. Two California Highway Patrol officers, guns drawn, captured and held the suspect until the deputy arrived and placed him under arrest. The handgun he’d allegedly aimed at the officer was recovered behind the truck stop.
Schroiff is lodged in the Yolo County Jail. He could not post bail set at $260,000. He faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and several lesser charges.
