BAKERSFIELD —Police arrested a 23-year-old man armed with a machete after he barricaded himself inside a southeast Bakersfield home on Tuesday morning.
Augustin Patino was booked into the Kern County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, assault of a peace officer, brandishing a weapon and willful cruelty to an animal.
According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the incident began when officers were called out to a home in the 300 block of Lotus Lane at about 9:24 a.m. on Jan. 21, for a man that was reportedly attacking family members with a machete inside his home. When officers arrived, they said Patino held up inside his home and refused to come out. Officers said they then used a Taser and a pepper ball gun to try and take Patino into custody, but they were ineffective. Finally, Patino discarded the machete, at which point officers deployed a K9 unit, which allowed offivers to take Patino into custody. Patino was taken to the hospital with minor dog bite injuries.
