A Colton man was arrested this week for allegedly robbing a Redlands gas station of cash, booze and cigarettes, according to city officials. Frank Colunga, 23, was arrested after a short police chase from the scene of the crime. A second suspect, 39-year-old Colton resident Michael James Soto, is being sought by investigators.
Soto and Colunga allegedly brandished handguns when they walked into the Unocal Station on Parkford Drive, just off Interstate 10. They robbed the clerk of register cash, and took off. Police spotted the get-a-way car nearby, which prompted the vehicle chase. Colunga crashed the car while trying to flee police, and Soto was able to run away before officers reached the automobile.
Officers reportedly found guns and stolen property in the vehicle.
Colunga was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
