Sacramento police have arrested a man who was spotted driving a stolen vehicle on the afternoon of January 31. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of West El Camino Avenue and Interstate 5 at about 3:39 p.m.
The driver, Esteban Araujo, 24, led officers on a pursuit that ended in the area of Vernon Road and Garden Highway, according to a Police Department news release. Araujo then ran from the vehicle and into the river where he tried to evade officers by swimming away.
Also taken into custody was Angelica Stewart, 27, (also known as Angelica Lopez), who was a passenger in the vehicle during the pursuit. No injuries were reported.
Police said officers found property inside the vehicle that reportedly had been stolen in a recent theft in a neighboring jurisdiction. A police spokesman said Araujo and Stewart were booked on suspicion of offenses related to possession of stolen property. Araujo also was booked on suspicion of vehicle theft, evading and being an ex-felon in possession of ammunition.
