MILPITAS – 22-year-old Ashley Annpardo Carey was detained by Milpitas police for petty theft under PC 484-488 on January 20. It was suspected that Carey was able to steal around $950 worth of merchandise before she was caught by store security at Marshall’s. Carey’s next court date has been scheduled for plea on April 17 at 1:30 pm in Dept. 51. Carey is facing a jail term of more than 4-months and a 3-year mandatory probation period with the courts.
Carey was reported to have been seen shoplifting at Famous Footwear, Nike, and Marshall’s located at the Great Mall in Milpitas. One MPD Officer working in the mall said, “When people are caught shoplifting here they often come in and steal from more than one store”. The officer said, “We stop in stores to make contact with merchants to let them know if they need any help on how they can contact us”. Several employees working in the mall said, “We see the police come in our store”. Often they tell the employee how to contact them if they need help. “We just call mall security if we have a problem,” one worker said. Smaller stores do not have their own security officers like larger stores.
Kohl’s, Marshall’s, and Burlington all have security employees who watch over the merchandise in their stores. Once a person has been found to be shoplifting, these employees will call the MPD substation located near the main garage area within the mall. Once an officer is available they will question the suspect and then book them into the main jail for stealing. In some instances a store employee will call in and provide a description of a suspect. Once a description goes out several security and police officers will help look for the suspect(s) that matches the description.
Carey was found to have stolen multiple items including clothing, fur, shoes, Nike shoes, socks boots, and more. Security officials with Famous Footwear reported they had seen a Hispanic female who had taken a pair of athletic shoes and concealed them inside her shopping bag. Carey was detained by loss prevention employees at Marshall’s were she had been stealing other miscellaneous items. She was then turned over to a MPD officer, who questioned and booked her into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for further prosecution of the theft.
