LEBEC — More details involving a man who was shot and killed by Kern County Sheriff’s deputies over the weekend have emerged, including the victim’s name.
According to a press release by from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when deputies responded to a domestic violence call at about 3:30 p.m. on May 24, at residence in the 900 block of Starr Court in the small mountain community of Lebec.
Upon arrival, deputies were confronted by 49-year-old parole Henry Curtis, who wielded a knife at deputies and refused to follow orders. After several minutes Curtis finally lunged toward deputies with the knife, causing deputy Rogelio Medina to shoot Curtis, striking him at least once.
Curtis who was wanted on an active parole violation warrant, was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputy Medina, a two year veteran of the sheriff’s department, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending a review of the shooting.
