Ventura County – The adage “it’s darkest before the dawn” certainly applies to the violence that occurred in the pre-dawn hours of June 11th at a Thousand Oaks apartment complex when a 911 Emergency call placed by a crime witness who observed an auto theft taking place soon had bullet flying in his direction.
It was in the parking lot of Thousand Oaks’ Biltmore Apartments where three young males in the act of auto burglary were spotted by a citizen who promptly called 911. When the three perpetrators attempted to flee the scene, the witness boldly attempted to follow them. He undoubtedly thought better of his attempted heroics when one of the young men turned and fired a gun at him, enabling all suspects to run away from the scene.
By then, officers of the Thousand Oaks Police Department were rolling into the area. When they spotted Abisai Meza, an 18-year-old Oxnard resident in full flight, he was quickly detained and apprehended. A secure perimeter around the area was quickly established with the help of a helicopter unit overhead and a K9 team on the ground.
The ensuing investigation and questioning of Meza led detectives to an Oxnard residence where a 17-year-old male and Jessica Soto, 24, were located. A search of the residence revealed them to be in possession of a handgun matching the caliber used at the Biltmore Apartments, and both were arrested. Meza was transported to Ventura County Jail on charges of conspiracy with his bail set at $45,000, while Soto was booked on charges of accessory to attempted murder with her bail set at $10,000. The male juvenile was takent to Ventura County Juvenile Hall where he was charged with attempted murder.
