Auburn Police Arrest Credit Card Thief

AUBURN—Auburn Police arrested Daniel J. Sowles on Tuesday, June 17 on suspicion of credit card fraud and burglary.

Police say security cameras caught Sowles, 50, using credit cards from the misplaced wallet of a shopper. The shopper lost her wallet when she was putting groceries into her vehicle in a parking lot at the Auburn Town Center on Monday. She soon recognized her wallet was missing and checked her accounts online.

She learned that a credit card had fraudulently been used twice Auburn area businesses. She immediately cancelled her cards.

Provided with the fraud information, Auburn investigators obtained clear security video of the suspect, who they believe used the shopper’s card from stores.

It should be no surprise that Sowles was arrested for this incident. Over the past few years he has faced several similar charges. Records show that he was picked up several times in 2013, including a Christmas Eve arrest on charges of possession of burglary tools and stolen property, forgery, use of a stolen access (ATM) card, identity theft, and even a drug charge. Theft of an access card charges were also made against him in May and October of 2013. Records also show arrests in previous years as well.
