Suspect was going to Court to see her Baby’s Father
Santa Cruz—The Santa Cruz County Sheriff Office along with a Court Security Officer arrested a mother after she tried to bring in a load gun into the courthouse. Authorities arrested 19-year-old Brisa Jimenez Santillan from Watsonville on numerous firearm charges.
On Thursday morning, as court began for the day at the Santa Cruz County Courthouse, at 701 Ocean Street, authorities were screening patrons at the security checkpoint that had a metal detector and an x-ray machine for entrance into the Courthouse. Ms. Santillan was there to see her baby’s father on his day in court.
As she was going through the checkpoint with her 6-month-old infant authorities located a loaded .25 caliber pistol in her purse. A Courthouse deputy confiscated the weapon and place Ms. Santillan under arrest.
Child protective Service of Santa Cruz County was called to take care of her baby. Ms. Santillan was charged with three felonies possession of a firearm in a public building, carrying a concealed loaded gun on her person and willful cruelty to a child.
“We don’t know why she tried to bring the gun into court, she does not have a criminal history and she is not talking,” Santa Cruz County Sheriff Deputy Ryan Kennedy said, “ She could have been pressured into this since the person she came to see was in court for a gang related matter.”
Her bail has been set at $5000.00 dollars.
Bringing guns to a Courthouse is nothing new. A related incident occurred in Santa Cruz County last year when a person tried to get a gun through security in a Courthouse in Watsonville.
