FRESNO – The second teenage suspect who was allegedly part of a failed attempt to rob a southeast Fresno jewelry store last month was arrested by Modesto police.
Edgar Yepez, 16, is suspected to be one of the two teens seen on surveillance video attempting to steal from Joyeria Marlenes jewelry store on the corner of Kings Canyon Road and Clovis Avenue on June 27.
The other suspect, a 17-year-old who has not been named by police, turned himself in on July 3.
The surveillance video released by police shows one of the suspects pointing a gun at a clerk. The other teen then gets on his phone and attempts to jump over the counter, but misses.
The owner, who was in the back office with his daughter and newborn grandchild, came out armed with a shotgun. The suspect on the phone dropped to the ground and then headed out the door. The armed suspect also ran out the door.
After the 17-year-old was arrested, Fresno police gave Yepez several hours to surrender before releasing his name to the public last Thursday. He was arrested by Modesto police over the weekend and transported to Fresno County Juvenile Hall.
Yepez is facing attempted robbery charges.
