One Dead, Four Injured in Monday Night Shooting

SAN BERNARDINO – The city’s 28th murder of 2014, which occurred on Monday night, ended with one death and four others who were injured. Police are looking for two suspects, both black males, said Sgt. Gary Robertson.

Orlando Wayne Hunt, Jr., 24, of Beaumont, died from multiple gunshot wounds he suffered in front of a store at 312 East Baseline Street. The shooting, which also injured four others, said Lt. Richard Lawhead, took place shortly after 11 p.m.

The shooting took place in a small strip mall, near Waterman Ave., which is one of the city’s main streets. Hunt was shot to death on the sidewalk in front of a smoke shop. Three victims were found inside the smoke shop and the other was discovered behind the store, said police. They believe he collapsed while running away from the shooting. Three of the four injured victims were male and the other was a female, the only description released by police.

The barrage of gunfire, which police said was gang and drug related, erupted at 11:11 p.m. When police arrived, they discovered the five victims, all of whom were taken to nearby hospitals. The four injured victims were listed in stable condition, according to Lawhead, “suffering from gunshot wounds to various parts of their bodies.” None of their injuries are life threatening, he said.

One night earlier, another shooting took place in the same area. A portion of the police description related that one group of multiple gunshots took place when rival gangs were shooting at each other. “One group,” said Robertson, “was firing their guns from Masters Donuts (306 East Base Line St.) toward the Jack in the Box (303 East Base Line), and the other from the Jack in the Box toward the doughnut shop.” The smoke shop employees and others took cover when the shooting started. None of the three smoke shop employees were struck, said police.

Police do not believe the two shootings were related. There were no injuries in the Sunday night shooting. Hunt’s death, said police, was the 28th in 2014.
