JURUPA VALLEY – Following the discovery of a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the suspect in the crime took his own life.
On Saturday, July 19, 2014, the Jurupa Valley Police Department received a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon. Officers responded to the scene at the 3400 block of Skylane Dr. in Jurupa Valley at approximately 8:30, arriving within minutes. The officers located adult female victim who was lying in the driveway of a residence and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The officers attended to the woman, administering what medical aid they could until medical personnel arrived. The victim was then transported to a local hospital, but unfortunately her wounds were too severe and she succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities also discovered a second victim at the residence when they arrived. The other victim was suffering from non-life threatening injuries. According to a press release, this victim was also transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, but no further information on the identity of the second victim was shared.
Upon the death of the woman with gunshot wounds, investigators from the Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit and the Jurupa Valley Station responded and assumed the investigation. At this time, the deceased victim was identified as Simona Mateas, a 43-year-old resident of Jurupa Valley.
Authorities believed that the suspect in this homicide investigation was the husband of the deceased and identified him as Avram Mateas. Investigators began to attempt to locate the suspect, but soon discovered there was no need. A report of a suicide in San Bernardino was confirmed by the city’s Police Department to be Avram Mateas.
According Sergeant Todd Torrenti, further investigation into the crime revealed that Avram and Simona Mateas were currently going through divorce proceedings.
