San Leandro Police arrest man suspected of molesting two young girls
Last Thursday morning, San Leandro Police arrested a man on suspicion of molesting two young girls, one age 6, the other age 9, in separate incidents that took place less than a mile apart, according to a police department press release.
Christopher Leroy German, 20, of San Leandro was charged Friday by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office with two felony counts of lewd and lascivious acts against children under the age of 14. He is currently being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. His bail has been set at $200,000. German is scheduled to enter a plea this morning at the Alameda County Superior Court in Hayward.
Police received reports of the incidents from the families of the two young girls on the night of Monday, October 13. Both girls were shopping with their parents, according to the police department press release.
According to an SFGate report, German approached two sisters at the Walmart at 15555 Hesperian Boulevard at around 7:45 p.m. and fondled the older girl. Fifteen minutes later, he was reported to have fondled another young girl at the Target store in Bayfair Center less than a mile away.
On Wednesday, police used the news media and social media to distribute images of the suspect taken from a video surveillance camera inside the Target store. Images also went out to other Bay Area police departments.
On Wednesday morning at around 7:10 a.m, an off-duty Berkeley Police Department Community Service Officer was on her way to work when she stopped at the 7-Eleven store at 15105 Hesperian Boulevard. She spotted a man inside the store who resembled the suspect in the video surveillance footage. He was even dressed the same, wearing a black dress shirt and black slacks.
The off-duty officer contacted San Leandro Police, but when police arrived at the 7-Eleven, the suspect had left. Fortunately, the off-duty officer used her cell phone to take photos of the suspect and his car.
An investigation by San Leandro Police detectives revealed that German worked at a parking garage in San Mateo. They went to his place of work, where they found 20 – 30 employees dressed in black dress shirts and slacks, similar to what the suspect was wearing in the video surveillance images. They immediately located German and transported him to the San Leandro Police Department.
Police also received an anonymous tip from Southern California identifying German as the suspect in the video surveillance images. Detectives learned that German had moved from Southern California to the Bay Area six months ago.
Lt. Robert McManus of the San Leandro Police Department says the investigation is ongoing. “As we continue our investigation, we expect that we may discover additional victims,” he said.
San Leandro Police urge anyone who may have additional information about this case to contact them at (510) 577-2740, or anonymously at (510) 577-3278.
