A burglary was reported near the 500 block of West Edmundson Avenue, in unincorporated Morgan Hill on Saturday,October 18 around 2:42 am.
A female resident was awakened by the noise of someone taking off the screen on one of her home windows. According to Sergeant Stenderup with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department, “The suspect, later identified as Steven Hather, removed the screen and opened the window”.
33-year-old Steven Hather of Morgan Hill was found trying to push himself past the surrounding blinds to enter from the window. Standerup said, “When he was about half-way into the residence he saw the victim and asked ‘Who else is here right now?’”
The victim did not say anything to the suspect. Fearing for her life, she pushed Hather out of the window and back outside, closing the window behind him. This stopped Hather from entering the residence, and apparently spurred him to flee the area. According to Standerup, “Hather fled south from the residence towards La Crosse Drive in the city of Morgan Hill”. Sheriff’s deputies responded throughout the area in search of the suspect.
While deputies were searching the property for evidence at the scene, Morgan Hill Police Department officers were dispatched to La Crosse Drive after receiving a call of a suspicious person. Hather was identified as the person matching the description of the suspect involved in the earlier burglary and was detained by police.
The victim positively identified Hather as the man who was trying to enter the residence through the window. Hather was subsequently arrested for burglary and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for the offense. Records show Hather has been arrested before, for being under the influence of drugs or alcohol in 2007, and for a DUI in 2009.
