DUI Smashes into Wall

The San Luis Police have a man in custody who allegedly crashed into a retaining wall while driving under the influence.

According to SLOPD, officers responded to a call at California Blvd. at San Luis Obispo Creek on Saturday around 11:45 p.m. regarding a single vehicle traffic collision. SLO Fire Department personnel also responded to the call.

Investigators say driver Charles Evert, 22, of SLO was driving his blue 1993 Ford truck southbound on California Blvd. when he veered off the roadway at San Luis Obispo Creek. Investigators report a retaining wall stopped the truck from dropping into San Luis Obispo Creek where he would have likely received more serious injuries.

Officers found Evert unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle. Fire department personnel stabilized the truck and used the jaws of life to extricate Evert, who sustained undisclosed non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.
Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the collision.

The investigative report will be submitted to the SLO District Attorney’s Office for a criminal complaint charging Evert with driving a vehicle while intoxicated, driving a vehicle on a suspended driver’s license that was suspended for a prior DUI and violation of bench probation.
