FRESNO – Police arrested a 25-year-old man following the fatal stabbing of a male victim early Saturday morning in central Fresno. Officers with the Fresno Police Department arrested William Gideons, of Fresno, on suspicion of murder, attempted robbery and resisting arrest.
On Saturday around 2 a.m., a 48-year-old man was found lying on the sidewalk and bleeding from a stab wound at Floradora Avenue and Thesta Street. He died at the scene, police said. The man has not been identified pending notification of his family.
Gideons allegedly got into an argument with his fiancée and attacked his mother-in-law before the victim was stabbed outside their residence. Police do not know if the victim and suspect knew each other or what the motive might have been for the stabbing.
After the attack, Gideons fled the scene and tried to rob two people on the corner of Lamona Avenue and Fresno Street before police caught up to him, authorities said.
Gideons, armed with a knife, challenged the officers to kill him, but the officers used a beanbag shotgun and stun gun to subdue him and take him into custody, authorities said.
