BAKERSFIELD — A 19-year-old Bakersfield man was arrested on Thursday afternoon after beating up his girlfriend and then leading police on foot pursuit down a busy Bakersfield freeway. Marcelo Carbajal was booked into the Kern County Jail for domestic battery and resisting arrest.
According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when deputies approached Carbajal and his girlfriend, who were walking near the intersection of Gage Street and Lincoln Street in Bakersfield at around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14.
Deputies had been called out to the area, as Carbajal was reportedly suicidal and armed with a knife. After encountering the deputies, Carbajal dropped a knife from his pocket to the ground and began to run away on foot, at times running head on into traffic a heavily trafficked section of Highway 178 in central Bakersfield.
Deputies gave chase and were able to catch Carbajal a short time later near the intersection of Quincy Street and Beale Avenue. Carbajal had sustained minor injuries from self inflicted knife cuts, and was transported to Kern Medical Center for treatment.
