RANCHO CUCAMONGA – A man, whose stolen vehicle was taken in Los Angeles on Monday, found the car thief trying to burglarize his home in San Bernardino County one day later.
In the process, he recovered his stolen car and, along with his son, chased down the female suspect, Lattice Mona Perkins, 28. It was a surprising twist to Monday’s car theft, when the victim, who resides on the 12000 block of Quail Court, was pulling into his driveway in another car. As he pulled up to his garage, police reports stated, the door started to open. His stolen car was inside.
Ms. Perkins, who was unknown to the victim, was attempting to back out of the garage. The victim blocked the stolen car with his second car. Perkins, who likely found the victim’s home by use of the GPS system inside the vehicle, jumped out of the car and ran.
The victim and his son chased Perkins, capturing and detaining her until law enforcement officers arrived to take her into custody. She was arrested on charges of auto theft, burglary, and possession of stolen property, and booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
Detectives believe Perkins used credit cards and the identities of several other victims in the greater San Bernardino and Los Angeles areas. Detectives believe Perkins may have committed similar crimes and additional victims may recognize her photograph.
According to jail records, Perkins is being held on $50,000 bail. When deputies searched the stolen car, they discovered personal items that belonged to Perkins along with evidence that she was burglarizing the house, including a bank card belonging to the victim.
They also found evidence that Perkins was planning to commit fraud or identity theft crimes against victims in both the Los Angeles and San Bernardino County area, according to law enforcement officials. Investigators believe Perkins likely committed other similar crimes.
This isn’t Perkins’ first run-in with the law. On November 13, 2013 and December 31, 2014, she was arrested for being a “fugitive from justice.” In addition, 2 weeks ago she was arrested for failure to appear in court.
