An 87-year-old Citrus Heights man was arrested after a domestic violence incident at his home. At about 3:00 a.m. Thursday morning, Citrus Heights Police were contacted when a neighbor reported hearing a woman scream in a nearby home.
Officers arrived at a home at the end of the 7000 block of La Cima Court and found a female victim with stab wounds to her hands, arms and upper torso. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment where she is expected to survive her injuries.
When officers attempted to question the husband of the victim, who also resides in the home, he refused to come out. A perimeter was then established around the home. Although officers made announcements to the suspect inside the home, they were unable to make contact.
Witnesses said they had come to the victim’s aid while she was being attacked by her husband. The Sacramento Bee reported that a neighbor, Joel Brantingham, had stopped the attack on the woman using a fireplace poker to scare him off. The man said the Wolff had his wife in a chokehold and was punching her when he confronted him.
According to Citrus Heights Police, at around 6:00 a.m. officers used a key and entered the home. After searching the house, the suspect was not found, but it appeared he left through a back door.
Officers proceeded to search the greenbelt in the back of the home. The suspect was quickly found sitting in the woods naked. He was taken into police custody without incident. The weapon used in the assault was also located after a search of the home.
The suspect was identified as David Wolff of Citrus Heights. Since Wolff was outdoors without clothing for an unknown period of time, he was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. Wolff was later booked on charges of attempted murder and domestic battery.
The Bee also reported that, according to Brantingham, Wolff’s wife had told him that Wolff suffered from mental health issues, and had recently switched medications. Citrus Heights Police have not confirmed a specific motive, however. But they did want to assure the public that the incident was not random, and there are no outstanding suspects. They would also like to credit the public for quickly reporting their concerns, which helped police respond and resolve the incident quickly.
This was the second incident in Sacramento County involving a man in his 80s accused of attacking his wife. Masaharu Ono was arrested on homicide charges in the stabbing death of 83-year-old Hiroko Ono in south Sacramento last Friday.
