San Luis Obispo Police have a man in custody for attempted burglary after he allegedly tried to break into a residence last Sunday morning.
According to SLOPD, officers responded to a burglar alarm around 7:35 a.m. at San Luis Print and Copy located at 265 South Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they determined a burglary with a loss of cash had just occurred. There were no suspects located at the scene.
Around 8:30 that same morning, officers responded to a call regarding an attempted burglary from a resident in the apartment complex at 2221 King Street. The second call came from an area only a few blocks away from the first incident.
The victim told police that someone had rung his door bell, but he did not answer the door. However, the victim stated that only moments later, he heard someone trying to pry one of his windows open. The victim said he confronted the suspect who fled on foot.
The officers who responded to the call searched the area and found a man matching the description given by the victim. According to SLOPD, the victim was later able to identify the suspect.
Police located a tool on the suspect which was allegedly used in the attempt to pry the window open. Investigators also discovered the exact amount of missing cash on the suspect that was reported missing from the commercial burglary.
The suspect is identified as Steven Michael Williams, 28, of Arroyo Grande. Williams reported that he had recently became homeless, and has been living in San Luis Obispo.
Williams was booked into SLO County Jail. He is charged with second degree burglary, attempted burglary and a violation of probation. His bail was set at $75,000. Records show that he was arrested in April 2014 in Santa Barbara County for burglary. He was living in Arroyo Grande at that time.
