SACRAMENTO—One man was shot and killed, and two others injured at a house party in North Highlands early Sunday morning, July 11.
Following multiple emergency phone calls, Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies arrived at approximately 2:40 a.m. to a residence on Viola Drive, near Watt Avenue and Winona Way, north of Interstate 80. Witnesses say at least four gunshots were heard in the normally quiet neighborhood.
Homicide detectives say the shooting occurred at a hosted party with at least 80 people—adults and minors—in attendance. Of these, more than 50 people were interviewed, but a suspect or motive has not yet been determined.
Detectives found a man in his late 20s had been shot in the torso. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. His identity has not been released pending notification of family. Update – the victim was identified as 24-year-old Rogelio Gastelum of San Mateo.
Another person was shot in the leg and a third victim was shot in the arm. According to a Sheriff’s Department news release, both are expected to survive. The victim that was shot in the arm is Gustavo Da Silva, who was interviewed by KCRA TV. He told them that fights had broken out, and the people holding the party had begun to tell the massive crowd to leave, but at that point someone pulled a gun and started shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have any information to contact the Sheriff’s Department at (916) 874-5115 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP. Tip information may also be left anonymously with the department at www.sacsheriff.com, by texting 274637 (CRIMES) and entering the keyword “SSD” or by calling (916) 874-TIPS (8477).
A GoFundMe page has been established to help raise money for Rogelio Adonay Gastelum’s family to help cover funeral expenses and support his family, which includes a baby girl.
Update 7/30/15 – An arrest has been made in the shooting death of Rogelio Gastelum. 18-year-old Ira Johnson of Sacramento has been charged with murder. Records show that Johnson was arrested on Monday, July 13 at his home in North Sacramento, about 6 miles from the scene of the shooting. Though he was arrested on a warrant the day after the shooting, his connection was only announced today. Detectives are still seeking another suspect, described as a black male, about 22, 5′ 6″ tall, 170 pounds with a fade haircut.
