Man Arrested for Stabbing Pitbull Pup

SACRAMENTO—A Sacramento man was on arrested Saturday, August 15, for seriously injuring a pitbull puppy.

Following a report, Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies arrived to the 4000 block of 43rd Street in South Sacramento where they found the dog “Rowdy” with one of his eyes gouged and a puncture wound to the throat.

The eight-month-old pit-bull terrier had been with Marquayous Hill, 19, at a nearby park when the attack happened. Rowdy belonged to Hill’s grandmother, Celestine Orizaba-Monroy. She said Hill had asked to take Rowdy to his home on Saturday afternoon. Less than an hour later, Hill allegedly told his family that he was going to kill the dog at Jack Davis Park.

“[Hill] said he wasn’t finished with him yet,” said Orizaba-Monroy. “He had this big knife and blood was dripping off the knife. I just didn’t think that was my grandson.”

She added that she didn’t know her dog was still alive until she saw a television report showing Rowdy at the shelter. The dog had sustained several stabs to the face and neck, but was still playful and affectionate the following day.

“Pitbulls are really tough, and the kind of recovery he’s made is a testament to how tough he is,” said Dr. Jean Rabinowitz, who performed emergency surgery on Rowdy. She said the pup lost a lot of blood in the attack, but fortunately there were no complications. Rowdy could be ready to leave the shelter in a couple of weeks.

The family says the dog was tied up while being stabbed. A man helped untie the dog, which may have saved his life.

Police haven’t said what will eventually happen to Rowdy, but Orizaba-Monroy wants him back.

Hill was booked at the Sacramento County jail on suspicion of animal cruelty and is being held on $10,000 bail.
