Both Subjects Were Riding Around With A Loaded Firearm
WATSONVILLE—Agents with the Santa Cruz Anti-Crime Team and Gang Taskforce arrested 26-year-old Watsonville resident Rogelio Castillo for being in possession of a firearm while on probation and for participating in a criminal street gang. They also arrested 25-year-old Angelique Urbina of Moss Landing on the same participation charge.
On Saturday afternoon, August 15, agents with the Santa Cruz Anti-Crime Team and Gang Taskforce were on patrol in the area of the 1400 block of Main Street in Watsonville when they noticed the wanted suspect Castillo was also in the area. Agents knew that Castillo was on probation and had a non-releasable warrant for his arrest, so they decided to stop and have a little chat with him.
During the stop on Main Street in Watsonville, agents contacted Angelique Urbina, whom Castillo had riding with him at the time of the stop. When Agents made contact with her, they noticed that on the floor board of the passenger side sat a loaded .357 Magnum revolver.
This was a big problem for Castillo because as a subject on probation he is prohibited from owning and possessing any firearms. An additional check from the Gang Taskforce found that there is evidence that Castillo was an active participant in a criminal Street Gang.
Rogelio Castillo’s record of arrests goes back to 2008 when he was 19. He was charged with possession of a switch blade knife. In March of 2009 he was arrested for assault with a firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, and street terrorism. In 2011 he was arrested three times on charges of possession and being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of stolen property, DUI, driving on a suspended license, forging a vehicle registration, giving false information to police, vandalism, failure to appear in court, and probation violations.
In 2013 he was arrested four times, for possession of a controlled substance for sale, a loaded firearm in public, and contempt of court – disobeying a protective court order. In the next year he continued with four more arrests, for vehicle theft, reckless evading with wanton disregard for public safety, DUI, driving on a suspended license, vandalism, failure to appear for court, and again, contempt of court – disobeying a protective court order. He was arrested in July this year for failure to appear and driving on a suspended license.
Angelique Urbina has been arrested herself prior to this incident, though not nearly as often. In October of 2013 she was charged with a DUI, and in November with disorderly conduct – being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In November of 2011 she faced a charge of domestic violence – inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or co-habitant.
Castillo was arrested Saturday for gang crimes, for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and being in violation of his probation. Urbina was arrested for possession of a concealed weapon in a vehicle. Both were booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail.
In a search of Castillo’s home, agents confiscated an additional .357 magnum and ammunition for the two firearms, along with a bullet proof vest.
