San Rafael Homicide Suspect from 10 Years Ago Extradited from Guatemala
SAN RAFAEL – In a San Rafael Police Department (SRPD) Community Alert, the department announced that a homicide suspect connected to a shooting in 2005 had been arrested in Guatemala.
On June 25, 2005, a 25-year-old San Rafael woman, Ana Mejia, was reported missing when she did not report for work or answer her phone. SRPD Officers checked motels in the area and located the car that Ana was driving parked in the lot of the San Rafael Inn, at 865 Francisco Blvd. Officers located the room she was staying in, looked in the window and saw her in the room. When the officers made entry they discovered that Ana was deceased from a gunshot wound.
SRPD Detectives identified Ana’s former boyfriend, Francisco Carrillo-Perez as a person of interest. Detectives learned that they had four children in common and that there had been a volatile relationship between them, and there had been instances of domestic violence. Ana had left Carrillo-Perez and moved to San Rafael from Southern California with her four children.
Carrillo-Perez had come to San Rafael to visit the children on or around June 25, 2005. After the visitation, Ana met with Carrillo-Perez and she was never seen alive again. SRPD Detectives pursued Carrillo-Perez to Southern California to interview him. Detectives learned that he had fled the United States and returned to his home country of Guatemala. SRPD Detectives worked with the Marin County District Attorney’s Office, obtained a federal warrant, and requested assistance from the FBI and the United States Attorney for his capture and return to the United States.
In December of last year, Carrillo-Perez was arrested in Guatemala for the murder of Ana Mejia. His extradition process has now concluded. Carrillo-Perez was picked up at San Francisco Airport by SRPD Detectives on August 20. He was interviewed then booked into the Marin County Jail on a $1,000,000 warrant for murder.
