On Tuesday, September 22, Santa Cruz Police responded to the 800 block of Ocean Street on a report of shots fired in the area. When Police arrived they made contact with a 20-year-old victim from Santa Cruz who struck in the leg.

There were no other victims, and police believe that early indications are that this shooting was gang related. The only victim was transported to a Bay Area trauma center for treatment.

Other officers began to canvass the area as the victim told police that the suspect fled in the direction of San Lorenzo Park, just beyond the Santa Cruz County Superior Court, which is adjacent to the scene of the shooting. Responding officers detained a suspect who was running through the park, and he was identified by witnesses to the shooting.

Detectives processed the crime scene for evidence. At this time, police are not looking for any other suspects in this shooting. Two days after the initial shooting Santa Cruz Police announced that they will indeed be filing charges against Cristian Cruz after they interviewed him.

Cruz faces charges of attempted murder in the second degree, carrying a loaded gun in public, and participating in a criminal street gang. Cruz’s bail was escalated from 250,000.00 to 475,000.00 dollars.
