RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Coroner announced that Juan Ulloa, 34 of Riverside was the suspect killed in an incident involving the California Highway Patrol over the weekend.
Officers from California Highway Patrol attempted to stop a Silver Dodge pick-up truck on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at approximately 1:45 AM. The vehicle was travelling west of Iowa Avenue and stopped on LaCadena.
Once the vehicle was stopped, the driver of the truck reportedly began shooting at the officers and several bullets struck their patrol car. The officers involved returned the fire. The vehicle and the driver were struck during the shootout.
The Riverside Sheriff’s Department reported in a press release that there was also a passenger in the suspect vehicle who exited and fled the scene on foot. The passenger in the incident is still outstanding.
The driver attempted to drive away from the scene, but collided into a chain link fence a short distance away where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
None of the California Highway Patrol officers involved were injured during the incident. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation into the incident per the request of the CHP and report that the case is active and ongoing. On Wednesday, the Riverside Coroner released that the deceased man was Juan Ulloa, 34 of Riverside.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave per California Highway Patrol policy. The involved officers’ names will not be released at this time.
