Benjamin Travis Sevier
Ventura – Among downtown Ventura’s many watering holes, Dargan’s Irish Pub Bar & Grill is known for both its convivial atmosphere and generous alcoholic libations. Frequently, however, when the conviviality suffers the consequences of excessive “libationing”, the establishment’s security guards have no option but to summon law enforcement to deal with the situation.
Such appears to have been the case near closing time at Dargan’s on Sunday, November 1st, when former U.S. Marine Corporal Benjamin Travis Sevier, a 29-year-old resident of Ventura with a background that includes operating as a USMC Special Operations Battalion Forward Observer with experience employing SOF techniques and tactics, created such a ruckus that he defied Dargan’s bouncers in their attempt to remove him from the premises.
According to the report issued by the Ventura Police Department Watch Commander, Sevier was “fighting them and refusing to leave the bar” when police arrived to take him into custody. When VPD officers instructed Sevier to stop fighting and submit to arrest, he summarily punched a security guard in the face and “started violently kicking at the officers.”
With little alternative, an officer drew his Taser with the intention of subduing him, but Sevier wrestled with the cop to gain control of the weapon. Ultimately, the officer maintained possession of the Taser and discharged it at Sevier to no effect. At that point, officers summoned the extent of their physical force and ultimately took him to the ground where he was subdued and taken into custody.
Having suffered “minor injuries” pursuant to the battle, Sevier was transported to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment, following which he was taken to Ventura County Jail and booked on charges of felony resisting arrest.
