3000 block of Independence Avenue — Marina

MARINA — A Marina Public Safety Officer is on administrative leave today after fatally shooting a man to stop him from stabbing his wife on Thursday night.

On December 10 at around 8:20 pm, Monterey County Communications received a frantic 911 call from the victim saying she was being attacked by her husband.  When police arrived on the scene in the 3000 block of Independence Avenue, they discovered an assault still in progress.

One officer ended up shooting the suspect to stop the attack. Both were taken to Natividad Medical Trauma Center for treatment.

54-year-old Thomas Arthur Gendreau died that night. His wife, 58-year-old Rubie Elizabeth Gendreau-Whitaker, died the next morning as a result of her injuries.

The Marina Police Department have turned the investigation over to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. The officer is likely to remain on administrative leave pending the DA’s findings.

It has been reported that Thomas Gendreau worked as a security guard for Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital in Salinas. According to neighbors, the couple had been married for 10 years with no apparent signs of trouble prior to the attack.
