Jason Newton and Glenn Olson
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY – At a time many people traditionally enjoy Christmas morning huddled around the family tree watching children rip open neatly-wrapped gifts, Glenn Olson, 46, and Jason Newton, 29, both residents of Santa Barbara, appear to have planned to postpone their usual Yuletide festivities in exchange for nefarious criminal activity.
According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, the two men were found “inside a fenced-off storage area” at Santa Barbara Motorsports in Goleta pursuant to a burglar alarm alert which brought SBSD deputies to the scene.
Upon arrival, deputies promptly spotted Olson and Newton, who summarily took off on foot. Obviously intent on high-tailing it out of there, the two men split up, “heading in different directions.” Olson, apparently not as fleet of foot as Newton, was quickly dogged down and taken into custody without further incident.
For his part, however, Newton made a valiant and violent effort to elude capture. When a Sheriff’s K9 Unit was brought onto the scene, Newton was discovered hiding in a nearby storage room “under a shelving unit.”
But when confronted with commands to surrender, Newton only became increasingly combative which earned him a very competitive placement for this year’s annual Best Mugshot Photo contest. Combative or not, Newton was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
Upon their arrest and transport to Santa Barbara County Jail, Olson was found attempting to sequester narcotics inside a body cavity, as he was in possession of “nearly 9 grams of heroin, methamphetamine, and prescription opiates” packaged for sales.
Both men were found to have multiple outstanding arrest warrants, whereupon Olson was booked on charges of burglary, smuggling narcotics into a custodial facility, possession of heroin for sale, possession of methamphetamine, destruction of evidence, resisting arrest, possession of stolen property, and possession of marijuana.
For his part, the freshly-battered Newton was booked on charges of burglary, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest, trespassing, conspiracy, prowling, and picking a fight with the wrong cops.
