GREENFIELD — The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two car thieves after deputies noticed a car wanted for vehicle violation traveling south from Salinas.

Arrested were 25-year-old Eduardo Villarreal and 19-year-old Orlando Gonzales, both of Greenfield.

Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputy Villanueva noticed a black 2008 Hyundai SUV leaving Salinas southbound on Highway 101 at a high rate of speed. A plate check revealed it to be an unreported stolen vehicle from the city of Greenfield.

Sheriff’s deputies searched the area throughout the southern portion of the county, but Villanueva was ultimately able to regain sight of the vehicle as it left the highway and headed southbound toward Greenfield on Los Coches road.

Monterey Sheriff’s Deputy Munoz was able to get ahead of the vehicle and lay down a spike strip at the intersection of Thorne Road near Birch. The vehicle drove over it and ground to a halt. The two suspects were then taken into custody and tarnsported to the Monterey County Jail in Salinas.

The owner of the vehicle was contacted and responded to the scene to identify his vehicle.
