SAN BERNARDINO – Police fired shots at suspects who reportedly stole a catering truck on Monday morning, though no one was struck by any bullets.
A school bus with children inside en route to a nearby campus was rear-ended by a stolen Amapoloa Rico Traco catering truck toward the end of the pursuit. The incident took place at around 9:30 a.m.
The driver of the stolen truck then crashed into a propane truck, which started spilling fuel.
Two suspects were hospitalized for injuries suffered in the collision (and not by any of the police gunfire), according to a San Bernardino Police spokesman. Police did not disclose why an officer opened fire.
No one was struck by the police gunfire, said Lt. Adam Affunti. It was not clear if the suspects had any weapons.
A San Bernardino Police spokesman, Lt. Rich Lawhead, said an investigation is underway. “There was obviously some reason the officer feared for the safety of others or for his own safety,” he said.
The truck, which had been described as being driven erratically, crashed at Mill St. and J St., said police.
Officials said another bus was dispatched to Richardson Prep Hi Middle School. There were reportedly 37 students on board, according to a school district official. Neither the driver of the bus nor the students were injured.
20 year-old Sean Fowler and 22-year-old Daiquan Horne were arrested and charged with suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft auto and evading police.
