SANTA CLARA COUNTY — New cameras installed to monitor blind spots in the Santa Clara County Main Jail captured an incident in which more than 30 inmates attacked another in what appears to be a racially-motivated attack.

According to Sheriff Laurie Smith, medical staff were dispatched to treat injured inmates. As of 7:30 that night, the jail was released from lockdown, save for where the incident occurred.

With gang initiations and turf wars within a locked down facility, fights over turf are not all that uncommon.

An attack of more than 30 inmates on others shows how quickly tempers can flare and a tense situation can flare up within seconds.

The fight broke out in maximum security pod 4A. Deputies were eventually able to intervene and break up the fight with pepper spray.
