$20,000 Fraud Nets 60 Days in Jail, 3 Years Probation

MODESTO – Yet another former insurance agent was convicted of fraud recently, this time in Modesto.  41-year-old Kannai David Scantlen was sentenced to 60 days in jail and three years of probation, in addition to the order to pay $20,000 in restitution.

His company was called “Kan I Save Insurance.”  His ruse was to receive premiums from businesses who thought they were receiving workers compensation coverage.  Then, he pocketed the money instead of sending on to the insurer.

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones commented on this case, saying, “Scantlen put legitimate businesses at great financial risk when he stole their premium payments and left them without workers’ compensation coverage.  If an agent or broker provides you with an insurance certificate, it is important to follow up with the insurance company and to verify your coverage and make sure you receive an actual policy.”

To try and cover himself, Scantlen issued fraudulent certificates in an attempt to deceive his clients into thinking that they had legitimate coverage.

It may have worked for a brief time but, thanks to investigators, another scam has been uncovered.
