Detectives Still Seeking Shooter in Highland Homicide

Jovan Meeks

SAN BERNARDINO – A man was killed and his wife survived a shooting attack last weekend, but police said the victims were not likely the intended targets.

Police are  looking for 21-year-old Jovan Meeks in a shooting that left Kirk Savala, 52, dead. Among the reports police have issued is that Savala along with his wife, Donna Savala, 50, were “inadvertently struck by gunfire.”

The Savalas, said police, were in close proximity to a dispute that was taking place with other people. When police arrived after the shooting at 10:34 a.m. on Saturday April 16, the suspects had left the area on the 25900 block of Baseline Avenue in neighboring Highland.

Kirk Savala was taken to an area hospital where he was declared dead shortly before noon. Donna Savala will survive, according to police, suffering from undisclosed injuries related to the shooting. As of Friday, there was no additional information disclosed about her condition.

Det. Justin Giles and Sgt. Robert Warrick, from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Specialized Investigations Division-Homicide Detail, are conducting the case. “It appears that (the Savalas) were in close proximity to a dispute between the (suspects),” said Giles, “and were inadvertently struck by fired bullets.”
