SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz Police Department arrested a Washington-area transient after he attacked a woman with a golf club on Friday afternoon outside a coffee shop on Pacific Avenue.
The 23-year-old woman, who was visiting from Oxnard and whose identity has been withheld, was allegedly sitting on a bench outside when 28-year-old Landon Horseman approached her and struck her across the head and shoulders with a golf club so hard that it broke in two.
He was also seen yelling at her as he left the scene. A witness called 9-1-1 and provided a thorough description, even following him until police arrived.
Police located Horseman a few blocks away near the intersection of Water & River. Ultimately, he proved uncooperative and had to be arrested at gunpoint.
Though the incident has been investigated, it has been determined that the attack was completely random and unprovoked. The victim and Horseman had no contact or association prior to the attack. She was treated at Dominican Hospital and her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Horseman’s ID was from the state of Washington. He told officers he was a transient and recently arrived in Santa Cruz. He was transported and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail with bail set at $50,000.
