VENTURA — Just after rush hour this morning, June 9th, Ventura Police Department Street Crimes Unit detectives happened to be cruising along the city streets when they spotted what is described by the Watch Commander as “a suspicious vehicle” passing by.
Curious at making such observations as they generally are, the detectives promptly initiated “a traffic stop” of the vehicle pursuant to what they perceived to be “an equipment violation.”
Behind the wheel of the car was 46-year-old Ojai resident Shane Young, a gentlemen with a recorded criminal history of the felonious variety.
As detectives made personal contact with Young, it was obvious that he was under the influence of something other than the damp morning air.
Upon questioning, Young displayed symptoms indicating the presence of a controlled substance in his system, whereupon he was taken into custody and placed under arrest.
Further investigation at the scene revealed Young to be in possession of “a small amount of suspected heroin” as well as a loaded handgun that had been reported as stolen pursuant to a vehicle burglary in the vicinity that had taken place during the prior week.
Given the totality of his circumstances, Young was then given a seat in the rear of a black-and-white and transported to Ventura County Jail, where was booked on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of stolen property.
